Dogville

P.S. Got spoilers, watch the show first.

I have just finished watching Dogville. It is a really disturbing film. One that mirrors real life in a scary and metaphorical way. In that when people get tempted by something, and that particular thing or person shows a moment of frailty and people take advantage of it. I am pretty sure everyone has done that, no matter knowingly or unknowingly, or whether it was something as small as to indulge in something sadistic and wrong (as can be seen in what Jason did to Grace, and what happened to my best friend in real life, among others) or to use someone in sick and twisted ways (as in how Thomas had used Grace in his sickening study of the human character, as in how Grace used the whole town of Dogville for her own study of the human character, and how someone i knew made use of someone i know, among others).

This film has made me sit up and take notice of basic human characteristics. Grace said that she would do exactly the same, if she were in any of Dogville's residents' shoes. But i beg to differ. Why is it that NO ONE of the original residents of Dogville (that is, everyone before Grace showed up) strike upon this genius idea (i'm kidding, its common sense) that they are at any time entitled to leave and find a better place? Why did none of the residents leave beforehand?

Ah, i have found the answer to my question. There was the abandoned old silver mine. That means that Elm Street was once a town of much larger scale than the 17 (was it 17 or 15?) residents that reside in it now. The mine was abandoned, obviously because it was stripped bare of all the materials in could offer. Similarly, i shall presume that because of that, many of the residents packed and left as well. These people who packed up and left, and are never featured in the film, are the ones who are optimistic and not resistant to change. These people represent the very essence of survival: being able to move on and adapt.

Now that leads me to the assumption that the residents who opted to stay in Dogville are resistant to change. Now, resistance to change is a really ironic thing. The action that these few residents took by NOT actively finding a better place after the mine ran out of ore contradicts themselves because they had came to this town to find a better living, directly or indirectly because of the mine, which was in the first place, the reason that the entire town was for. Now I ask: Was Grace right in that the residents in this town of 17 people were entitled for forgiveness when they themselves knowingly stayed in this town. They did not have the courage to move on to find a better life. Did Grace have a reason in the first place to think that they were just plain old folk? No, these people KNEW what they were getting themselves into, just when they made the decision to stay.

Why is it that Grace did not protest when Chuck made a move on her? She could have resisted and ran out. Sure her actions would have caused her to be arrested. But like Juri said, the most sacred thing that a female can have is her virginity. Now i do not know whether Grace had lost her virginity beforehand or not, but surely as I have been reminded of everytime i read the newspapers and in other media that Americans are a proud people. Surely their pride for their country stems from a belief that the people themselves are cultured, and that they do not tolerate barbaric behaviour of any kind. As such, why did Grace summon up her pride and courage to struggle and run to the cops? What the cops may do to her; whether she'll end up being raped by then OR use her "links" to get out, does NOT matter. What mattered is that Grace allowed herself to crumble under the stress when it was clearly the most important time to be strong instead of keeping her pride and swallowing the fear of being caught by the cops.

No need to see the web's comments about it.

Just watch it.

I for myself shall be more judgemental of what i do to others. I that only God can rightly judge us, but i shall take steps to make sure i am happy with my character(i'm currently a nervous and emotional wreck i think).

As i read and think over what has been typed out, i know that there are a lot of flaws in logic, and that there are too many possibilities that could have happened other than what i typed. The most important thing is, the dastardly Dogville residents deserve their deaths, except for Achilles.

Bah human nature. So ambiguous.

Anyway did i say i love Nicole Kidman?

She's got these really perfect looks. And her performance in this show proves that she's really smart too.

I've got lots more drily unfunny comments and sub-intelligent remarks to make, but its 5:41AM and i need to sleep.
